Teaching Philosophy

My teaching style is a synthesis of traditional, technique based lessons, Teaching Artistic Behavior open studios, and collaborative, experiential exercises. I am process-centered and work to create an environment in which students take creative risks and use divergent thinking. I strive for student led learning experiences in which students take the skills and techniques they have learned to create and solve their own artistic problems. I utilize a multicultural lens of art history that fosters the ability to see multiple perspectives.

I believe that Visual Literacy is becoming increasingly important as the way the world communicates evolves with technology. I think that art making and analysis provides students with an opportunity to reinforce their literacy skills and is essential for a holistic education. Self-expression can provide the catharsis that keeps students in positive health and self-image. The arts can empower people to see the potential in themselves and their communities. My goal as an educator is to guide students in the acquisition and practice of creativity, adaptability, and resilience.
